5 productivity tips for freelancers

by Kobus Van den Bergh | Jun 15, 2016
  • Doing more, in less time, is a key differentiator between freelancers who succeed and those who don’t. To help you get the most out of your day, we’ve put together our top five productivity tips for freelancers.
    5 productivity tips for freelancers

    1. Develop a routine

While freelancing means you don’t necessarily need to keep traditional office hours, having a schedule or routine that works for you is still important. Whether you’re working at home or from a café, try to ensure that you’re sitting at your workspace by a certain time each day, ready to tackle your to-do list.

Scheduling a time to work, and sticking to it, will help you minimize distractions and get things done. Applications like Google Calendar can be accessed from almost any device and are great for staying organised. You can use it to keep track of any urgent tasks you want to get done each day.

    2. Do it now

If something will take less than five minutes to do, get it over with. Small tasks tend pile up quickly, so it’s easy for them to take up more time than they need to. Completing these task will not only give you a sense of accomplishment, it will also save you from having an unnecessarily long to-do list.

    3. Focus on one thing at a time

Research has shown that multitasking is less productive than doing one thing at a time. Results showed that people who are regularly exposed to several streams of information at once remember less than those who complete one task at a time.

    4. Analyse and automate recurring tasks

Apps like RescueTime can help you understand your daily habits so you can focus and be more productive. If you track your workflow, you will be able to see patterns forming and what is taking up most of your time. This will help you to identify which tasks can be automated to save you time.

Streamlining small tasks adds up. Even something as simple as creating a template for documents that you use often can save you hours in the long term.

    5. Clean your work area

This is especially true if you work from home. Keeping your desk space clear will not only help you find things more easily, but will also help eliminate unnecessary distractions. Make sure there’s nothing in sight that will draw your attention away from your work.
