ONS report highlights stability of UK migration

by Sable International | Jun 02, 2014
  • The latest figures from an ONS (Office for National Statistics) report show that net migration to the UK remained at 212,000 in 2013, unchanged from the previous quarterly figures.

    Key findings from the report

    • Net migration – which refers to the number of immigrants coming to live in Britain minus those leaving to live abroad – was stable at 212,000 between September 2013 and December 2013, a slight increase from the previous year's figure of 177,000.
    • The number of National Insurance numbers issued to overseas workers increased by 7% in the year ending March 2014, with significant increases in NINO registrations by citizens of Poland, Italy, Bulgaria and Romania.
    • In the year ending March 2014, work visas issued increased by 10% (with skilled work visas up 18%).
    • There were increases in study visas (6%) and student visitor visas (14%).
    • Family visas dropped by 4%.
    • There was a 5% increase in asylum applications in the year ending March 2014. This figure stands at 23,731 - well below the 2002 peak of over 84,000.
    • Figures confirm that the so-called 'influx' of Romanians and Bulgarians (after the lifting of labour market restrictions in January) never truly materialised. The ONS has stated that only 22% of Romanian and Bulgarian registrations were for those who had arrived in the previous three months and that most of those registering were already in the UK.
    • Net migration from outside the EU is at its lowest level in 10 years, down 11,000 on the previous year.
According to ONS survey data estimates, the UK attracts the following numbers of people:
    • 214,000 for work
    • 177,000 to study
    • 71,000 for family reasons
    • 24,000 seeking asylum
    • 21,000 no reason stated
    • 19,000 returning home
