UK nationality focus: British mothers

by Sable International | Aug 18, 2011
  • In the past, British Nationality could only be passed down through generations by the male line. Recent gender anti-discrimination legislation has been introduced that retrospectively allows British women to pass on their nationality to their children (subject to certain conditions).

It is also worth noting that applicants who were disadvantaged by the gender discrimination in the previous law can bring claims forward for their own children, provided that certain other criteria are met. Such applications fall to Home Office discretion and have to be lodged before the 18th birthday of the child concerned.

Sable International offers a free online assessment of your nationality status. By putting in details of the place and date of birth for yourself, your parents and your grandparents, the results are filtered through over 2 million unique alternatives that lead to British Nationality. Through our partnership with Philip Gamble & Partners, we can advise you further and assist with any applications for British Nationality.
