The Portuguese government aims to increase foreign investment in key sectors of its economy through this unique residency-by-investment solution. The Golden Residence Permit Programme allows participants to make an investment in Portugal and in turn receive the opportunity to apply for Portuguese residency. You can invest by:

  • real estatePurchasing real estate to the value of €500,000 or more
  • investmentMaking a capital investment with the minimum value of €1 million
  • employ''Establishing a Portuguese company that employs at least 10 people

Once you have made your investment, you can apply for Portuguese residency.

GVP-residents

As a GRPP participant you will:

  • familyGain dual residency for you and your family
  • travelTravel visa-free throughout the Schengen Area
  • propertyOwn property overseas
  • secureSecure a ‘plan B’ for you and your family in terms of security, education and lifestyle

On top of all this, the visa only requires you to spend seven days in Portugal for the first year and 14 days every subsequent year for it to remain valid. This means that you can remain living in South Africa and spend just two weeks per year in sunny Portugal.

After five years, you and your family will be able to apply for permanent residence in Portugal. After six years, you will be eligible for Portuguese citizenship.

An alternative retirement plan for South Africans: The Non-Habitual Residence programme

Portugal has opened its arms to foreign retirees looking for an alternative retirement plan. The Non-Habitual Residence (NHR) programme offers non-Portuguese nationals at retirement age a 10-year tax break on qualifying foreign income.

This kind of a programme is particularly attractive to citizens of countries like South Africa. Increasingly volatile economics are threatening to deprive South African citizens of a comfortable retirement and this programme is a great way to spend your golden years in comfort.

To take part in the programme, you will need to become a non-resident for tax purposes in South Africa (through financially emigrating), and reside in Portugal for at least six months a year.

The Portuguese government’s definition of retirement is quite loose and you only need to ensure you aren’t employed in Portugal. This means you can still keep business interests anywhere outside of Portugal if you wish; making this the perfect option for people looking to go into semi-retirement.
