South Africa’s foreign exchange regulations are complex. Transferring money in and out of the country requires expert knowledge and understanding of the legislation requirements, which we can provide you with.

How much can you transfer?
Whether or not you will need a tax clearance certificate from the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) will depend on how much money you intend to transfer in a calendar year, as well as whether you are living in South Africa.
You can transfer a total of R11 million a year
- R1 million discretionary allowance (no tax clearance required from SARS
- R10 million foreign investment allowance (tax clearance required from SARS
Tax-payers over the age of 18 who are South African residents are eligible for this allowance. It is mandatory to have a tax clearance certificate that is valid for 12 months to take advantage of this allowance. As of 1 April 2015, the emigration allowance increased from R4 million to R10 million per person per calendar year and R20 million per family unit.
We can help you make use of the allowance, free of charge. Once the tax clearance is received, the process is quick and easy.
If you want to exceed the amounts above, you will need to apply to the SARB for a special dispensation. These applications are rarely straightforward, but our forex team can guide you through the process.
