THE MARKETS AND THE RAND

The Rand weakened, albeit marginally, on Monday to 13.05, compared to Friday’sclose of 13.04, in line with Dollar strength against some of the major currencies. The Dollar gained against the Yen (0.2%) and marginally against the Euro, but lost against the Pound (0.4%).

The Rand was weaker against the Pound (0.2%), but stronger against the Yen (0.2%) and the Euro (-0.1%).

Metal prices were up on Monday. Copper was up by 1.9% while gold and platinum were both up by 0.3% on the day. Brent was 0.7% higher, at USD 56.18/bbl.


NEWS HEADLINES

  • The Rand is very much remaining where it was yesterday as markets and investors, both locally and abroad, hold their breath ahead of the 2017 Budget, to be delivered tomorrow.
  • The SARB’s leading indicator was released this morning. The index crept up to 96.3 in December from 95.6 pts in November, making it an even six months of upward movement.
