Use your IRA to secure a Golden Visa in Portugal
Did you know you can use your existing retirement funds to invest overseas – and gain a path to European residency?
A Self-Directed IRA (SDIRA) gives you the power to invest in alternative assets, including real estate, private equity and foreign investments abroad. With the right structure in place, your SDIRA can directly fund a qualifying Golden Visa investment — all while keeping your retirement savings tax-advantaged.
How it works:
- You open an SDIRA with an IRS-approved custodian and roll over funds from your current IRA or 401(k).
- The SDIRA sets up a dedicated trust to make the investment — giving you checkbook control.
- The trust invests in a qualifying investment for the Portugal Golden Visa — no personal tax hit, no penalties.
- The SDIRA remains a tax-exempt entity — allowing your investment to grow tax-free inside your retirement account.
Why this matters:
- Many Americans don’t realise they can leverage their retirement savings to pursue international lifestyle goals.
- A Golden Visa offers residency, travel rights within Europe, and future citizenship options — all funded through an efficient, tax-smart vehicle.
