Ashley Deakin

BA, MBA, FCA

Chief Operating Officer

Ash Deakin

Ashley chose to study Archaeology and Anthropology at Durham University, having been influenced by Raiders of the Lost Ark. Digging up Roman pottery on the North Yorkshire moors proved not so glamorous and ultimately, he was lured into the accounting profession.

He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Coopers & Lybrand in 1989. After moving temporarily into publishing as a finance manager, he went to the University of Cape Town in 1994 to complete his MBA. On arrival back in the UK in 1995, he teamed up with Reg Bamford to start 1st Contact. He has been embroiled with the adventures and expansion of 1st Contact, and more recently Sable International, ever since. Aside from being the COO, he is heavily involved in providing general entrepreneurial advice to our clients.

Outside of work, Ash spends his time with his family (he has three children), at his holiday house in Norfolk and sails competitively.

Ash's motto: "Carpe diem"

Scott Brown

CA (NZ), ACA

Managing Director: Accounting

Scott Brown

Scott majored in Accounting and Business Administration at Canterbury University in Christchurch, New Zealand. On arrival, he joined 1st Contact in its early days, completing annual accounts for contractors.

After a number of placements, including managing a baggage relocation company and 1st Contact Visas, he was appointed as group financial controller in 2003. In 2008, he was appointed to the board and became managing director of the Accounting Division.

In 2010, following the merger with a number of smaller accountancy practices to form Sable International's accounting team, he became Managing Director of Accounting, heading a team of over 40 accountants and assistants specialising in SMEs and contractors. Scott is also interested in travel, music, fine dining and wine.

Scott’s motto: "Just get on with it."

Gary Kockott

BComm

Managing Director: South Africa

Gary Kockott

Gary was schooled at Grey College in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, after which he completed a BComm degree at the University of Port Elizabeth. Being entrepreneurial by nature, he started his own business in Johannesburg right after his studies. This quickly taught him the old adage: “Sink or swim.”

He sold his business in 2002 and headed to London, where he joined Sable International in 2004, managing numerous facets of the business including tax, immigration and commercial. Gary joined the board as a director in 2004.

He is an avid mountain biker (although he says he's certainly no professional), plays tennis and squash in his spare time and enjoys watching all sports. He’s travelled extensively, with his favourite holiday destinations being the West Coast of the United States and the Amalfi Coast in Italy.

Gary’s motto: "In the dust of defeat as well as in the laurels of victory, there is a glory to be found if one has done his best."
