Golden Visa fast-tracks Portuguese residency process

by Sable International | Jun 24, 2015
  • Political stability, clear and transparent tax rules, a relatively low cost of living, abundant beaches, fantastic golf courses and a great climate are just some of the reasons Portugal has become a popular destination for investors. The “Golden Visa” now makes it much easier for foreign investors to secure Portuguese residency and even citizenship without having to live there permanently.

The Golden Visa Accord, which came into effect in October 2012, is a unique citizenship-by-investment solution, which allows investors to obtain Portuguese residency and later EU citizenship for themselves and their families.

There are three investment routes available to qualify for a “Golden Visa” to Portugal:
    1. A capital investment with a minimum value of €1,000,000 (1 Million Euros),
    2. The creation of a minimum of 10 jobs through the establishment of a company, or
    3. The purchase of real estate property with a value of at least €500,000.

Further requirements include passing the Portuguese language test, as well as spending a minimal amount of days in Portugal.

Under this legislation, permit-holders may apply for Portuguese citizenship and an EU passport once they have successfully held their residency for a total of 5 years.

A residency permit also gives investors the right to visa-free travel throughout Schengen Europe, as well as the option for their family members to apply for residency and later citizenship.

This golden opportunity is available to all foreign national investors outside of the EU, irrespective of their country of origin.

Passport to Portugal and associates have been at the forefront of the implementation of this new government legislation, which looks to generate foreign investment into Portugal.

The various steps can be complex but Passport to Portugal and partners have more than 25 years’ experience in Portugal, across all critical areas. Services include all fiscal and bank account applications, assistance with property selection, legal fees and assistance with residency applications and renewals. When the time comes, PTP can also assist with EU citizenship.
