The UK Tier 1 (Investor) visa

The Tier 1 (Investor) visa provides a relatively easy, if somewhat expensive, route to UK residency. In addition to this, it allows high net worth individuals from outside the European Economic Area (and Switzerland) to invest a large sum of money into the UK.

Invest in the UK, gain residency

For years the UK has been a place where investors have been happy to store their funds. The British Pound has been an excellent store of value over the long term.

You can apply for a Tier 1 (Investor) visa if you:

  • Can invest £2 million or more in the UK in government bonds or share capital of active and trading UK companies
  • Are from outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland
  • Are over the age of 18
  • Have a UK bank account
  • Have funds which are available to be invested in the UK and held in a regulated financial institution

Bespoke investment solutions

We can tailor an investment package to your specific requirements depending on your risk appetite and long term-goals.

While low-, medium- and higher-risk options are available to all investors, our independent financial advisers will try to ensure that long-term goals are put in place.

We understand that wealth is not built through high-risk, short-term investments, but rather through conscientious studying of long-term trends and the active management of risk. This ethos carries through into any investment you make as part of the Tier 1 (Investor) visa scheme.

Visa duration and permanent residency

Once you have successfully invested your funds, you will be granted a visa that allows you to work and live in the UK for three years and four months. This visa can be extended for another two years if you satisfy certain criteria.

Once you’ve lived in the UK for five years on this visa, you will be eligible for permanent residency, also called indefinite leave to remain (ILR).

After holding ILR for 12 months, you can apply to be naturalised as a British citizen. Once you are a citizen you may apply for a British passport.

Investor visa requirements

You’ll need to invest at least £2,000,000 in any of the above-mentioned schemes. You may invest more if you wish.

Extensions and indefinite leave to remain

You are able to stay in the UK for three years and four months on a Tier 1 (Investor) visa. If you wish to extend your visa and you meet the extension requirements, you can extend your visa for a further two years.

You can reduce the time it takes to settle in the UK by increasing your investment amount. Investments of £5 million and £10 million will enable you to apply to settle after three and two years respectively.

This visa class counts towards qualifying for residency in the UK, leading to indefinite leave to remain.

Visa restrictions

There are certain professions which you may not pursue as well as some companies you may not invest in if you wish to secure a Tier 1 (Investor) visa.

You cannot work as a professional sports coach or sportsperson. You also may not invest your funds in companies that are involved in property investment, property management or property development

As with all Tier 1 visas, you will not be able to access public funds.
