by Samantha Carter-Vawda | Aug 18, 2016
  • World-class food and wine, friendly people, a temperate climate and a history stretching back thousands of years are just some of the things that make Portugal an amazing country. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting facts about this fascinating place.

    1. Portugal has a rich history. It has had the same state border since 1139, making it the oldest nation-state in Europe. The capital, Lisbon, is older than Rome.
    2. The Marquis of Pombal abolished slavery in 1761 - just over half a century before Britain, France, Spain or the USA.
    3. The 2016 World Peace Index ranks Portugal as the fifth most peaceful country in the world.
    4. The Portuguese are famous for their incredible seafood dishes. Per capita, they eat more fish and shellfish than any other country.
    5. The locals are also famed for their hospitable culture. There is no better example of this than the 15,000 person dinner table that was set to celebrate the opening of the Vasco da Gama Bridge.
    6. More than 50% of the world’s cork is produced in the Montado.
    7. In 2008, Portugal became the first country to make it compulsory for people to have fingerprints on identity cards.
    8. The Vasco da Gama Bridge spans the Tagus River. At a massive 17.2 kilometres, it is the longest bridge in Europe.
    9. As many people now know, Portugal is the only country in which fortified wine can be made and named Port. The drink originates in the city of Porto.
    10. Over 80% of the population in Portugal identifies as Roman Catholic. In recent years, the number of other religions in the country has begun to increase.
    11. The famous yellow trams of Lisbon were imported from the US and are referred to as “Americanos”.
