Can I study in English in Europe?
Yes, you can. One of the most common misconceptions about studying in Europe is that you must speak the local language. However, programmes are taught in English at most private institutions and some public institutions. We are partnered with more than 70 institutions in Europe, all of which teach entirely in English.
Many universities also offer free or subsidised local language classes to international students. This means you can study in English while learning the local language to help you feel more at home abroad and improve your job prospects after graduation, should you decide to stay on.
Will my South African qualifications be accepted in Europe?
Yes. South African qualifications are widely recognised by European institutions. For undergraduate study, you’ll usually need a National Senior Certificate that meets the admission criteria of your chosen course and institution.
For postgraduate study, many institutions will accept your South African bachelor’s degree and may even allow you to apply directly for a master’s programme without needing an additional honours year.
What are my study options?
Europe offers a range of degree options across multiple disciplines. From medicine and engineering to fashion design and marketing, European universities offer something for everyone.
Different countries also tend to specialise in different fields. For example:
- In Germany, top choices for international students are engineering and computer science.
- In France, business, fashion and hospitality are popular.
- The Netherlands is known for sustainability, environmental science and law.
- In Spain and Italy, international students often pursue degrees in fashion, architecture and tourism.
- In Ireland, top study options include technology, finance and engineering.
- In Hungary, a popular choice is medicine.
A study abroad adviser can guide you toward the best place to study your chosen degree.
Where will I live?
Most universities in Europe offer dedicated support services to help international students find accommodation. This could be in university residences, shared student housing or private rentals. Availability and cost can vary depending on the city and country.
Many institutions also have partnerships with local housing providers, and our advisers can help guide you through the process.
Can I work and travel while studying?
Yes, and it’s a major benefit of studying in Europe. In most countries, international students can work part-time while they study, helping you earn extra cash and gain real-world experience. This is typically 20 hours a week during term and full-time during holidays. Many universities even have partnerships with global brands like Amazon, Deloitte, L’Oréal and Bulgari, offering internship opportunities that give you a competitive edge after graduation.
One of the best parts of earning extra cash while studying is using it to explore Europe. With a student visa or residence permit, you can travel freely within the Schengen Area – meaning it’s easy to explore nearby countries on weekends or during breaks by hopping on a train or bus.
Are universities free in Europe?
While not free, the cost of studying in Europe is significantly lower than those in countries like the US, the UK or Australia.
This makes Europe a great option for South Africans looking for quality education at a reasonable price.
What are my opportunities like after graduation?
A European qualification is internationally recognised, giving you access to further study or job opportunities around the world.
Many countries offer post-study work options and clear pathways to permanent residency. This means you don’t have to return home immediately after graduating. You can gain valuable international work experience, grow your professional network and even build a life abroad if that’s what you want to do.
With a European degree, you’ll also be able to apply for further study in other countries across Europe, the UK, North America or Australia, depending on where you plan to go.
