The best places to see Christmas lights in London

by 1st Contact | Nov 21, 2016
  • The festive season is getting in full swing and London is already starting to sparkle with seasonal decorations. We’ve put together some of the best spots to get you into the Christmas spirit.
    London Christmas lights

    Oxford Street

This will be the 57th year that Oxford Street lights up for the festive period, and singer Craig David was given the honour of the switch-on. Decorations include 1,778 snowball-like lights and shop windows also create displays for the run-up to Christmas. Lights will be on until 5 January 2017, so you still have plenty of time to see this famous street in all its glory.

    Carnaby Street

Carnaby street boasts its biggest Christmas display this year, spread across 12 surrounding streets. This year’s theme is the swinging ‘60s, making this spot one of the most distinctive in the capital.

    Covent Garden

One of the most famous destinations for Christmas light lovers, Covent Garden’s theme is mistletoe and has over 40 mistletoe chandeliers hanging over the streets in the area. There is also an enormous Christmas tree and a 22-foot tall silver reindeer in the middle of the square.

Whilst the mistletoe caters to the romantics, a Lego Santa Express train made up of over 500,000 bricks is the perfect attraction for families with young children.

    Trafalgar Square

With one of the most famous Christmas trees in the world, Trafalgar is a must-visit over the festive season. Since 1947, the people of Norway gift London with a giant spruce tree every year to thank them for their support during World War 2.

In the week before Christmas, a different choir performs each night, raising money for various charitable organisations. The tree goes up on 1 November, and is lit up from noon to midnight until 5 January 2016.

    Regent Street

This year’s display, themed “The Spirit of Christmas”, will be a throwback to Regent Street’s first display in 1954. It includes 16 large angels, each with a train of lights trailing 15 metres behind them.
