For many student-athletes, playing sport at a US university means competing at a high level while earning a degree. But getting onto the right college team and securing a sports scholarship takes more than talent. It requires preparation, planning and starting at the right time.

The ideal time to start is usually Grade 10 or 11. This gives you time to strengthen your academic and athletic record, build a strong recruitment profile and explore suitable university opportunities.

Your US sports scholarship timeline

Grade 9: Build your foundations

You do not need to start actively contacting universities in Grade 9, but it is a good time to lay the groundwork. Focus on your sport and school results, keep track of your achievements and learn about US college sports pathways such as NCAA, NAIA and NJCAA.

Grade 10: Start building your profile

Grade 10 is a good time to start building your student-athlete recruitment profile. Look at your sporting level, academic results, preferred degree and budget to work out what type of university and playing level could suit you.

Start keeping track of your progress and achievements by saving sporting results, statistics, rankings, academic information and references. These will become valuable when you begin actively engaging with universities and coaches.

This is also a good time to create your recruitment video. For international student-athletes, video can be particularly important because US coaches may not have the opportunity to watch you compete in person.

Grade 11: Start active recruitment

By Grade 11, the focus shifts from preparation to active recruitment. This is often when the process becomes more complex, and experienced guidance can make a real difference.

Finding the right university means looking beyond rankings and big-name sports programmes. Your athletic ability, academic goals, preferred degree, budget and long-term ambitions all need to be considered together.

This is where Sable International can help. We assess your academic and sporting profile, identify suitable university opportunities and support you through recruitment, from connecting with the right coaches to exploring scholarship opportunities.

The goal is not simply to find a university that wants you, but one where you can thrive academically and athletically.

Grade 11 to 12: Manage eligibility and scholarships

Eligibility is an important part of the US sports scholarship recruitment process, so do not leave it until the last minute.

Depending on your chosen pathway, you may need academic records, proof of graduation, exam results and official transcripts. Some student-athletes may also need to complete eligibility checks through organisations such as the NCAA Eligibility Center or PlayNAIA.

This is also when scholarship discussions may begin. Full sports scholarships are possible but highly competitive. Many student-athletes receive partial athletic scholarships, sometimes combined with academic, international or need-based financial support.

When comparing offers, look beyond the scholarship amount and consider the total cost of attendance.

Grade 12: Complete your application and prepare to travel

By Grade 12, the focus shifts to completing your university application and making sure everything is in place for your next step after Matric. This can involve academic documents, university applications and other required paperwork.

Sable International can support you through this stage, helping manage applications, liaise with universities and guide you through the process. Once you have completed Matric and accepted an offer, we can also assist with student visa preparation and the practical arrangements for your move to the USA.

Having experienced support through these final stages can make the transition from school to university much easier.

Why should you start your US sports scholarship journey early?

Starting early gives you more choice and more time to prepare. It gives you time to:

  • Improve your athletic performance
  • Strengthen your academic results
  • Build quality recruitment material
  • Explore more university and scholarship opportunities
  • Resolve eligibility issues
  • Avoid rushed applications and missed deadlines

Starting late does not necessarily mean you cannot play sport in the USA. However, you may have fewer university choices, reduced scholarship availability and less time to communicate with coaches.
