How to get the best value for money when shipping your goods

by Kobus Van den Bergh | Jul 22, 2016
  • Whether you’re emigrating or simply flying home, shipping your goods will almost always work out cheaper than paying excess baggage fees at the airport. We look at a few things you should consider to ensure you get the best deal.

If you only have a small bag of clothes to send, then the process is quite simple. However, if you’re transporting everything but the kitchen sink, then the stakes are a little higher when it comes to cost and savings.

There are three factors to keep in mind when narrowing down your transportation options and choosing the one which offers the best value.

    1. Budget

Your budget will be the biggest determining factor when deciding which shipping method is best for you.

There are three options: Road, air or sea freight. Shipping your belongings by sea will usually be more cost-effective than having them flown home. Road freight is only available in cases where your destination can be reached by land.

It’s also worth budgeting for any additional expenses that might crop up, including import duties, taxes or other amounts due to government departments at your destination.

    2. Belongings

Keep in mind that sea and road freight charges are based on the overall volume of goods for shipment. Airfreight charges are calculated differently, based on the weight of your package in kilograms.

While it’s still worth getting comprehensive quotes for all methods, it will generally work out cheaper sending heavy items by ship or road, and lighter, bulkier items by airfreight.

    3. Time limit

Road and airfreight are generally the quicker options. Our road trailer service serves routes between the UK and Europe, allowing your items to be delivered in approximately 10 – 14 days. You can expect the transit time for an unaccompanied airfreight to be much the same.

While sea freight is generally the most cost effective option, it will see you waiting the longest. Transit time will generally be around 8 to 12 weeks.
