The clocks have gone back, the evenings are drawing in and, as I write this, it's cold and raining outside. There's no point pretending otherwise: British autumn has definitely arrived!

For international students studying in the UK, particularly those experiencing their first British winter, this time of year can take a little getting used to.

Only a few weeks ago, students were enjoying long, light evenings. Now, it's getting dark much earlier, temperatures have dropped, and an umbrella has become an essential part of everyday life.

But this time of year has another side. Autumn and winter bring some wonderful experiences and traditions, giving international students an opportunity to discover what life in the UK is really like.

There is plenty to look forward to

The coming months can be great fun.

November brings Bonfire Night, with fireworks and bonfires lighting up the night sky. Towns and cities begin switching on their Christmas lights, festive markets open, and schools start preparing for concerts, dinners and festive activities.

There are crisp autumn walks, cosy evenings with friends, hot chocolate after being out in the cold and, if we're lucky, perhaps even a little snow.

For students who have grown up in a different climate or with different traditions, these experiences can become some of the most memorable parts of their time in the UK.

A change of season can also be a change of mood

Of course, we also recognise that this isn't always the easiest time of year.

Living away from home is a big adjustment at any time. Add darker days, colder weather, a busy school term and Christmas approaching, and some students may begin to miss home a little more than usual.

Often it is the simple things that help.

Getting outside during daylight hours, keeping up with sport and other activities, eating and sleeping well, and spending time with friends can all help students adjust to the shorter days.

Keeping in regular contact with family and friends at home is important too, while also encouraging students to build friendships, routines and a sense of belonging here in the UK.

Sometimes it’s about noticing the little things

This is where a student's support network becomes particularly important.

With parents potentially thousands of miles away, schools, houseparents, homestays and the Sable Guardians team can all play a part in noticing when a young person isn't quite themselves.

Perhaps they're spending more time alone, have stopped joining activities they previously enjoyed or simply seem quieter than usual.

It doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong. Sometimes, a friendly conversation and knowing that somebody has noticed is all that's needed.

If a student does need more support, having trusted adults around them who they feel comfortable talking to can make an enormous difference.

Guardianship is about more than emergencies

At Sable Guardians, we see guardianship as much more than being the person to call when something goes wrong.

It's about getting to know our students, staying involved throughout their time in the UK and working closely with parents, schools and homestays to support their wellbeing.

Sometimes, that means helping to resolve a serious issue. At other times, it can simply mean checking in, listening or reassuring a student who's having a difficult day.

These everyday moments matter too. Knowing there's someone to turn to can help students feel supported as they adjust to life away from home and make the most of their time in the UK.

Embracing a British winter

So yes, the days are getting shorter. And yes, there will undoubtedly be plenty more rain!

But there is also lots to look forward to.

For international students, the coming months are an opportunity to experience another side of British life, make memories with new friends, discover new traditions and, hopefully, begin to feel increasingly at home here.

So our advice for the months ahead is simple: wrap up warmly, get outside when the sun does make an appearance, say yes to new experiences, keep talking to the people around you and enjoy everything a British winter has to offer.

And perhaps invest in a very good umbrella.
