Who qualifies for the HPI visa?
To apply for the HPI visa you must meet the following:
- Recent degree: Your bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree must have been awarded within the last five years from one of the eligible universities.
- Ecctis verification: Confirm your qualification is equivalent to a UK degree level.
- Financial requirement: Show at least £1,270 in savings held for 28 days. This increases if you are adding dependents to your application.
- English language: Americans and Canadians are on the list of nationals who do not need to prove their knowledge of the English language.
- Be 18 or older at the date of application.
What you can do on an HPI visa
One of the biggest advantages of the HPI visa is its flexibility. While in the UK you can:
- Work in any job (except professional sports)
- Freelance or run your own business
- Study or volunteer
- Bring your partner and children with work rights
- Switch to other visa categories, such as Skilled Worker or Global Talent, after gaining experience
The HPI visa doesn’t lead directly to permanent residency, but it’s widely used as a launchpad to longer-term UK immigration routes.
How the HPI university list works
The UK updates the HPI eligible universities list each year based on global rankings such as:
- QS World University Rankings
- Times Higher Education World University Rankings
- Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)
A university must appear in at least two of these rankings to be included, which is why the list changes annually. Always check the list for the year you graduated, not just the year you apply.
How much does the High Potential Individual visa cost?
While the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa offers exceptional flexibility, it’s important to understand the full cost before applying. The total cost is made up of several components and depends on the length of your visa.
HPI visa fees
At the time of writing, applicants can expect the following costs:
- HPI visa application fee: £880
- Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS):
- £1,035 for every year your visa is valid for. This is an upfront cost.
- £2,070 total for a two-year visa
- £3,105 total for a three-year visa (PhD holders)
The Immigration Health Surcharge gives you full access to the UK’s National Health Service during your stay.
Qualification verification (Ecctis)
Before applying, you must verify your degree through Ecctis:
- Ecctis qualification assessment: typically, around £252
- Confirms your degree is equivalent to a UK qualification and meets the English language requirement (if applicable)
Additional costs to consider
You may also need to budget for:
- English language testing (if required)
- Biometric enrolment
- Dependants’ visa fees and IHS (if applying with a partner or children)
While the HPI visa represents a meaningful investment, many applicants view it as a cost-effective way to gain UK work rights, international experience and long-term immigration flexibility without employer sponsorship.
